Moviegoers in Greenville will have to drive elsewhere for now to catch their favorite Hollywood blockbusters.
On Monday, The Edge 8 Theatre announced its closing effective immediately. The closure came with little warning, but Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon believes the closure is only temporary.
“The city council and I are working closely with the theatre management staff to see it re-opened,” he said. “The Edge has been open for 11 years and has been an important part of the community. We want to see it opened back up, and we believe it will.”
The eight-screen theatre is located on Paul Stabler Drive off Willow Lane behind the Walmart Supercenter. While McLendon is confident the theatre will re-open, he admits the current state of entertainment puts a strain on theatres like The Edge.
“There’s so much to choose from now through streaming movies on Netflix and other applications right at home,” he said. “A lot has changed in the 11 years since The Edge was opened, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want a theatre. I feel like there’s still a lot of value in the ability for families to go see a movie together.”
The Edge released a statement to those people who currently have gift cards to the theatre. According to a post on social media, people with gift cards can receive full reimbursement by mailing gift cards to: Phoenix Theatres Entertainment, Attn: Accounts Payable, 9111 Cross Park Dr., Suite E275, Knoxville, TN 37923.
