Like any police department, the Greenville Police Department has faced tragedies in its many years serving the Camellia City.

Next Wednesday, May 16, the department will host its annual Fallen Officer Memorial in the Wendell Mitchell Center at Greenville’s Lurleen B. Wallace campus to remember GPD officers that lost their lives in the line of duty.

GPD chief Justin Lovvorn said that the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgiana Police Department have also been invited to participate in the ceremony.

This year, the keynote speaker will be Hal Taylor of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). Taylor is the secretary of the ALEA and has held positions ranging from the ALEA chief of staff to the deputy chief of staff for the Alabama Bureau of Investigations. Taylor replaced former ALEA secretary Stan Stabler in April 2017, serving as acting secretary until sworn in officially by Governor Kay Ivey.

The GPD and other participating agencies will give commendations to officers, including in-department officer and deputy of the year awards.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. and is open to the public, although seating is limited at around 300. Lunch will follow the ceremony.
