Greenville High School’s Lady Tigers softball team traveled to Troy Monday to take part in the area tournament.
The area tournament decides which teams move forward in the playoffs.
The other teams involved in the tournament were Charles Henderson High School and Brewbaker Technical High School.
GHS faced Brew Tech in the first game, which proved to be an offensive slug-fest that remained precarious until the final moments.
Head coach Brandon Smith
“In the first three innings, both team played great defense. In the fourth inning, we got some good hits, scored some runs, Jaqueta Adams came in and hit a two-run shot,” said head coach Brandon Smith.
The game was tied 19-19 in the bottom of the final inning.
A Brew Tech runner made it home and was judged safe.
“I think she was out, but I can’t make any excuses. We have to get the ball back to the pitcher in a case like that,” Smith explained.
Game 1 ended 20-19.
Brew Tech lost to Charles Henderson in the following match, leaving GHS facing Brew Tech again in a same-day rematch.
In the rematch, Greenville attacked quickly, finding themselves up 4-0 in the top of the 2nd, remaining at that score until the top of the 5th inning.
Following that, Brew wTech unleashed an offensive attack, managing to hit in 6 runs in the final innings and close the game out, 7-4.
Smith said he recognized the improvements in his team, regardless of the games’ outcomes.
“We hit the ball a lot better than we did at the beginning of the season,” he said, “defense was there, but [Brew Tech] got lucky hits.”
Smith also commended the seniors that helped lead his team throughout the year.
“I told my seniors, they had no reason to hold their head down. They left everything on the field and gave it all they got,” he said.
