The Butler County Board of Education held its regular March meeting last Thursday night in the Central Office Boardroom.

Curriculum Director Lisa Adair shared the updates for the curriculum and instruction programs.

The lack of funds continues to prove a stumbling block for the school system.

Adair presented information and the need for funding.

Her main concerns focused on the lack of funds for curriculum resources, spring testing, the mid-year data from the winter assessments, and the new dual enrollment opportunities for students.

Adair commented, “I agree with the Board that we are all frustrated with our current student achievement data; however, there hasn’t been ample time for deep systemic change to effect lasting results in our outcomes,” said Adair.

Strycker presented his update during the meeting. Reviewing his Butler County Commitment plan as well as his new funding proposal, Strycker said, “I am still convinced that if we instill leadership skills into our K-6 students [The Leader in Me Program], and then require our 7-12 students to participate in school activities [getting them connected], then outstanding student achievement marks will follow.”

Matthew Shell and Brandi Mosley presented a budget and finance update. 

Preparing for the future and what is best for the school system, Strycker added, “We need to prepare for possible budget reductions if the Ad Valorem is not approved by our community. Next month, we will be bringing the Board recommendations of possible areas of reduction to balance our budget.”

The board recognition for the month included the Greenville Middle School Jr. Beta Club members and sponsors. The Jr. Beta Club will attend the national convention for Beta Club in June. Strycker emphasized the achievements of this group, he said, “I am very proud of these students and sponsors […] than that, I am proud of their leadership in Greenville Middle School. We need student leaders such as these young people.”
