Recently, a caution light and sign was installed on School Highlands Road in front of the Bright Beginnings and Board of Education building. Working closely with the maintenance department of the City of Greenville, the caution light was carefully placed in an area close to the school, alerting oncoming traffic of the crosswalk and children passing. Speeding on this road not only endangers the lives of the speeder, but all of the children and adults walking along the road. Concerned citizen and parent of a student Deron Springer said, “People don’t realize this is a school. We need something that says slow down, There is a sign that says watch out for children but that is in the residential area.” Realizing the problem in September of last year, Springer began to speak out about the issue. Very grateful for the progress the school board and the city has made in these last few months, Springer added, “It goes back to see something, say something. This was minor, but I thank them for having the ears to hear and the heart to do something about it.” Discussing the issue, Dr. John Strycker said, “I noticed it [the need] from Day 1. We put up signs warning others but it finally came down to we needed to do something else. We took it a step further.” Attached to the caution light is a speed limit sign marking the area as a school zone. The sign and solar powered caution light had been in storage for almost 2 years, after the school acquired it from a past state grant. The city installed the sign and caution light itself. Strycker added, “The city is always so great to work with us on things like this because they care about the kids too.” The caution light is mounted on a stand that flashes between the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon.-Fri. Strycker explained, “Primarily the traffic is coming from this direction. We are not trying to impede upon the traffic on the weekend.
It’s just the right thing to do.”
