Greenville High School football players gathered in the school auditorium Wednesday to watch teammate Malik Bunch sign to Tuskegee University.
Bunch, who has played varsity football for 3 of his 4 high school years, has been an offensive weapon and versatile role player for the Tigers at wide receiver.
But despite his success on the field, he has stood out the most as a student, according to football coach Josh McLendon.
.“[Bunch] works hard, he’s a good student… He’s just everything you could ask for in a student-athlete,” said McLendon. “He was a big weapon for us, and the other teams knew that. They knew that no matter where he was at, they had to pay attention to him.
Bunch said that Tuskegee recruiters recognized his athleticism and potential when watching him play basketball.
“Coach K[elvin Powell, Tuskegee’s recruiting coordinator] came and saw me play some basketball games, and said they liked my style and wanted to give me a shot,” Bunch explained.
His competitiveness shines through when talking about his hopes for playing at the college level.
“I want to help my team win, and get a ring,” said Bunch.
The Tigers finished with a 6-5 record in 2017, narrowly losing to Beauregard in the first round of playoffs. On offense, Bunch finished the season with 13 catches for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns.
