A chance to see (and do) some corn shucking, cow milking, mule plowing and more comes to Butler County this weekend with the return of Old Time Farm Day.

The 12th annual event kicks off for the general public on Saturday, October 28 at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. at the OTFD site on 2828 Sandcutt Road (County Road 25).

However, local students can get a sneak peek of many of the exhibits, wagon rides and demonstrations on Friday, which is School Day.

“We started the School Day several years back and it’s been successful. It’s a good learning experience for the kids,” says Russell Parrish, one of the event organizers.

“It’s just $1 per individual—parent, student or teacher–who attends on Friday, and everyone needs to remember to pack and bring their own lunch.”

On Saturday, the OTFD kitchen under the pavilion will be operating at full gear, offering plenty of its famous sweet tea to wash down the freshly grilled burgers, hot dogs and more on their menu.

Attendees can expect to see demonstrations of old-time syrup making, corn shelling, blacksmithing, plowing, log sawing and more, and even get to try their hand at some of the activities if they wish. There are also special activities for the younger set planned, including barrel rides, ever-popular pedal tractor races, a petting zoo and old-fashioned fun and games.

As always, an array of vintage and antique tractors–Fords, Farmalls, John Deeres, McCormicks, International Harvesters and a few “furrin” rides–will be on display, with their owners proudly steering the tractors in the afternoon parade. The parade will be followed by the fun of the slow tractor race, with the last tractor over the finish line, not the first, the winner.

“We also expect to have lots of folks there setting up their booths with their wares,” says Parrish.  Original artwork, arts and crafts, hand-crafted jewelry, quilts, homemade jams, jellies and preserves are among the many items OTFD visitors will find on offer.

Admission on Saturday is $3 for anyone over 12; $2 for ages 6-12 and children under the age of 6 are admitted free.
