Though the Greenville Tigers missed their starting quarterback, Javion Posey, it was difficult to tell thanks to a solid overall performance from all three phases as the Tigers put away Rehobeth on the road 28-13.
Greenville head football coach Josh McLendon said that, despite the 15-point win, the match with the Rebels was a grueling grind that proved the mental fortitude of his Tigers.
“It’s good to get that win,” McLendon said. “It was a tough game. Kids played extremely hard, and the other team played really well. It was just one of those nights you have to really grind it out.
“Our quarterback was out, and I thought we did a really good job of hanging in there.
We also had some self-inflicted wounds like last week, though not necessarily turnovers or bad snaps, but some false starts and uncharacteristic mistakes that put us in situations that we can’t be successful in. That was the only real drawback of the night—there were way too many penalties on us.”
Junior Jabez Sims took the helm of the Tiger offense on the road in Rehobeth, taking all but five snaps Friday evening.
“Jabez did a good job for us,” McLendon added. He managed the game well.”
McLendon said that it was the Tigers’ defense that potentially proved the team’s biggest key to success as it kept a vast amount of pressure off the offense.
“I think the big thing was that our defense played well and put us in situations to be able to take chances on offense,” he said. “We ran the ball really well—Arick Boggan had a good game at running back. We just had one of those games where we just had to manage the game, understand where we were at and what we were trying to do. It was just a hard-fought game, and I’m really proud of our guys for being able to pull it out.”
The Tigers will face a Wetumpka Indians team Friday at home that has not known defeat this season. What’s more is that the Indians have beaten their five opponents soundly this year, averaging 47 points per game in the process.
“They are extremely good,” McLendon said.
“They’ve got a running back that has been offered by several SEC schools. So they’re going to be extremely tough. But we’re getting better. Our thing is to continue to take it one day at a time. There are a lot of mistakes to correct, but if we can get everybody 100-percent healthy, we’ve got a chance.”
