Martha Geralyn Adair

Martha Geralyn Adair, 73, a resident of Greenville, Ala., died at L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016. The funeral service will be Monday, Dec. 5, 2016 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Greenville with Reverend Angie Long and Reverend Joe Lisenby officiating and Dunklin and Daniels Funeral Home directing. Burial will follow at Fort Dale Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Dunklin and Daniels Funeral Home.

Born in Florala, Ala., on April 19, 1943 to Clarence Gerald Manning and Martha Elizabeth Manning, Mrs. Adair earned two master’s degrees and dedicated her entire life to educating others. She devoted most of her career to Butler County Schools. One of her greatest legacies is the pre-k program, Bright Beginnings, which became a model program for the State Department Office of School Readiness. As the federal programs director for the county, she secured millions of dollars through grants that served to better our schools including the prestigious Barbara Bush Foundation Literacy Grant.

She was affiliated with several professional organizations and volunteered for several community organizations. She served on the board of the Butler County Children’s Policy Council, was a member of the Multi-needs Committee for DHR, the Greenville Rotary Club, and the First United Methodist Church in Greenville.

She is survived by her loving husband, Louis Cranford Adair; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Michael Adair-Oberer; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Linda Adair; daughter, Angela Adair Garrett; grandchildren, Alexander and Adair Garrett, Hunter and Maddox Adair-Oberer, and Taylor and Sydney Adair; sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Edward Lewis; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy Manning and Harry Truslow.

Steve Davison, Charlie Kennedy, Jacob Lewis, Michael Lewis, Zachary Lewis, Phillip Murphy, Michael Oberer and Harry Truslow will serve as pallbearers. The Butler County Gideons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer books be donated to any Butler or Crenshaw County School library.
