An initially close battle between the Greenville Tigers and the Wetumpka Indians grew gradually out of hand as the Indians defended home turf with a 41-19 win over the Tigers.

Greenville head football coach Josh McLendon said that it was a few key missed opportunities that spelled the difference between a close matchup and a runaway loss.

“We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities that we had early in the game, and we gave up a couple of big plays on special teams,” McLendon said.

“Offensively, we went and drove the ball down to about the 5-yard line, and had it called back on a holding call.  So we tried a field goal, and missed it.  They got the ball and drove down and scored on that possession.  IT was 14-6 there for a little while, but we just could never get anything going offensively.  We had some good plays in spurts, but nothing consistent.”

The Tigers now slip to a 1-3 overall record, though a victory next week would put the Tigers at 2-1 in the region.

The only region opponent in Class 5A Region 2 with no losses—or losses at all, for that matter—is the Carroll Eagles.

Though the Tigers will have their work cut out for themselves as they face the Tigers of Eufaula, a perennially tough opponent.

“They were off tonight, so they’ve had two weeks to prepare for us, which is always tough,” McLendon said.

“But we’re playing at home, which is good.  We’ve got four games in a row now and we’ve got to play better on both sides of the ball, and special teams has to get better.  A win would put us in a good spot to do what we need to do.  We’ve just got to go back to work, correct our mistakes and I think we’ll be fine.”
