The Butler County Board of Education will begin its search for a new member to replace Terry Williams, who passed away earlier this month.
Williams had represented District 2 since January of 2003, and had twice served as president of the board.
Linda Hamilton, who served on the board with Williams for 12 years, said it will be difficult to replace Williams.
“Terry was easy to work with,” said Hamilton. “He wanted to make sure that the children of Butler County had an opportunity to become productive citizens as they moved into adulthood and were able to contribute to their local communities and thereby make this city, this county and this state an overall better place to live. He worked diligently at that, and he will be sorely missed.”
The remaining board of education members have 30 days to appoint someone to fill the vacant seat. The newly appointed member must reside in the District 2 and will serve the remainder of the unexpired term.
The board is currently accepting applications from those interested in filling the vacancy.
Applications will be accepted until Aug. 2.
The applications are may be picked up at the Butler County Board of Education Central Office on School Highlands Road, or by contacting Tina Powell at (334) 382-2665, Ext. 1100, or by emailing tina.powell@butlerco.k12.al.us.
Completed applications must be forwarded to board attorney Lewis S. Hamilton through certified mail at or by hand delivering it to 505 East Commerce St. in Greenville.
In the event the board fails to fill the vacant position, the state superintendent will appoint some to fill the seat and finish the unexpired term.
A special called meeting will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 9 a.m. to interview prospective candidates.
The meeting will be held at the Central Office Boardroom located at 949 Oglesby St. in Greenville.
The public is encouraged to attend.
