Shoppers who hit Greenville stores during the first weekend in August could walk away from the register with a little extra cash.

That’s thanks to a resolution passed Monday by the Greenville City Council that authorizes the city to take part in Alabama’s annual sales tax holiday.

“This is an opportunity for us to tell the citizens of Greenville thank you for shopping locally,” Mayor Dexter McLendon said.

The City of Greenville has participated in the sales tax holiday since its inception in 2006.

The holiday, which is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 5 and end at midnight Aug. 7, covers clothing items less than $100, school supplies, books, computers and computer equipment.

Each county and municipality in Alabama decides if it will waive local sales tax, collect a portion or not participate in the sales-tax-free weekend. Retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday.

In other business:

 

• The council passed a resolution accepting Jameson Lane, which runs from the south right of way of Cahaba Road to the north line of Ruby Tuesday’s property, as a dedicated street. The city will now be responsible for all street repair, maintenance and lighting of the roadway. The city council was petitioned to make the change by Bates Development, LLC.
• The council voted to enter into a contract with Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood for environmental engineering inspection and monitoring services as required by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) for all ADEM permitted city properties. Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood will provide gas monitoring, ground water monitoring, monthly storm water inspections and sampling and analysis inspection and monitoring services as required by ADEM. The firm will charge the city $10,400 for semi-annual groundwater monitoring and analytical costs at the closed landfill, $700 for explosive gas monitoring, $250 per inspection of Boan Road Pit No. 2, $400 per groundwater inspection of Hwy. 31 landfill, and $650 per groundwater inspection of Mac Crenshaw Memorial Airport.
• The council appointed City Clerk Sue Arnold as the elections manager and absentee ballot manager for the 2016 municipal election. The election will be held Aug. 23 with a runoff held Oct. 4, if needed. Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon plans to seek a fifth term as the city’s mayor and is therefore disqualified from performing certain duties required by state law to conduct a municipal election. Arnold will perform all the duties, which would have been performed by the mayor.

The council also approved the following expenditures:

• $2,123.42 to DH Athletics, LLC for six dugout covers for the Greenville Softball Complex

• $35,000 to Sur-Line Turf, Inc. for renovations to the football field at Tiger Stadium

• $2,695 to McKissick’s for a storage building for the Greenville Parks and Recreation Department to be used at Beeland Park

• $4,107.84 to Physio Control for annual maintenance for heart monitors, AEDs and defibrillators for the Greenville Fire Department

• $4,300 to Southern Sand and Gravel for 43 loads of sand for the renovations to the football field at Tiger Stadium

• $11,308 to Gulf States Distributors for ammunition for the Greenville Police Department

• $6,999.48 to Ewing for an irrigation system for Tiger Stadium

•$4,955.32 to Thompson Tractor Company for repairs to garbage truck No. 62

The next city council meting will be held July 11 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
