Greenville High School’s second annual golf tournament fundraiser brought in more than $8,000, according to head football coach Josh McLendon.

The tournament’s main purpose was to raise money for the Greenville Tigers football program, which features a sizeable number of players at this point in the year.

“It goes toward equipment issues that we need to address,” McLendon said.

“We bought some new jerseys this year.  Pre-game meals, post-game meals, travel… anything that you can think of that we’ll have to pay for is what we’ll use this for, plus our other fundraising opportunities throughout the year.”

Though this year’s figure is a bit shorter than last year’s fundraising efforts, McLendon insists that it’s still a massive help to the Tigers’ upcoming campaign in 2016.

“It was another good turnout.  We had 36 golfers, we raised some money and we were able to do the things that we wanted to do.  So I was very pleased with what we did,” McLendon said.

“We were right at $8,500.  We didn’t have as many big corporate sponsors this year, but we’re looking to do some more things during the summer that we can hopefully get those guys involved in.  That’s a lot for us, so we’re very appreciative of what we could do.”

McLendon had a second reason to celebrate last Wednesday, as his group of four proved the team to beat alongside Dexter McLendon, Greenville defensive coordinator John Jones and former Tiger Ryan Smith.

But the best news lies ahead for the Tigers as the fundraiser will prove a huge benefit to the start of summer activities.

“We have two camps at the end of the month in June,” McLendon said. “We got to Auburn High School on June 28, and to Hoover on June 30.  The one in Auburn High School will be an Organized Team Activity (OTA), so it’ll be 11 on 11.  It’ll be something that we can definitely use and see where we’re at and what we need to work on. It gets everybody involved, and it’s not just the receivers and secondary.

“The one in Hoover is a national 7-on-7, and it’s one that the Alabama Coaches Association is sponsoring, so I’m looking forward to that one.  We’ll go back to Auburn University on July 14.  So we’ve got some big weeks coming up, and we’re looking forward to using those as a chance to compete and get better.”
