If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

It’s an old adage that applies to football and fundraising equally, and Greenville head football coach Josh McLendon is reprising one of 2015’s most successful fundraising campaigns Wednesday at Cambrian Ridge with the annual GHS golf tournament fundraiser.

The tournament’s main purpose is to raise money for the Greenville Tigers football program, which features a sizeable number of players at this point in the year.

“It goes toward equipment issues that we need to address,” McLendon said.

“We bought some new jerseys this year.  Pre-game meals, post-game meals, travel… anything that you can think of that we’ll have to pay for is what we’ll use this for, plus our other fundraising opportunities throughout the year.”

Greenville is a much larger football program than the other schools in the county in terms of sheer player count, and with a larger team come larger demands.

“We’re at more than 100 players on the football team right now.  That’s 100 kids to equip, and 100 kids to feed,” McLendon said.

“When you start talking about 100 kids, it starts adding up pretty quickly; $2,000 or $3,000 here and there becomes $5,000 or $6,000 pretty quickly.  We definitely want to have the best and do the best for each player, so it’s just one of those things where we look to raise some money, and we ask for help from people throughout the community and they’re willing to help.  And we sure do appreciate it.”

Last year’s tournament proved a rousing success for the team, raking in more than $17,000.

This year’s four-man scramble tournament will do little to buck the trend.

The tournament is slated to begin at Cambrian Ridge at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, and registration will remain open until the start of the tournament.

“We’ve pretty much got our teams, but if anyone wants to come out, sign up and join in, they’re more than welcome to do so,” McLendon said. “We won’t turn anybody away, for sure.”
