The youth of Butler County will be able to inaugurate their summer vacations in earnest on June 11 as the American Legion of Greenville will host its annual Kids’ Fishing Day.

The pond near the American Legion will be the site of a morning full of rest, relaxation and fun from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.  Lunch will also be provided following the event.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Department, Fred’s of Greenville, Coastal Wood Products, A.C.E.O.A. and the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division are the organizations responsible for bringing the educational fishing experience to the Camellia City.

Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden said that the sheriff’s office and the aforementioned divisions helped provide more than $1,000 worth of catfish for the occasion.

He added that the annual fishing day experience is vitally important, particularly for inexperienced anglers.

“A lot of kids that come out for the fishing day have never been fishing,” Harden said.

“They really enjoy when they catch their fish.  The look on their face… you just can’t replace that.”

The free fishing event, as well as the pond of catfish, is open to children ages 5 to 12.

Participating children are asked to bring a hat, sunglasses, bait, a rod, a reel and an ice chest for fish.

Children must also be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and must be one of the first 50 to register.
