A project to increase airplane storage capacity at Mac Crenshaw Memorial Airport has taken off.

At Monday’s meeting, the Greenville City Council awarded a bid for taxilane development for the future construction of T-hangars. Brundidge, Alabama-based S.A. Graham Company, Inc. was awarded the project after submitting the low bid of $387,350.

The project is part of the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program (FAA AIP).

The hangar improvements would increase the facility’s capacity, while also providing patrons with increased hangar options, such as a T-hangar and corporate hangar.

Since 2000, with the assistance of the FAA AIP, the city has spent approximately $10 million to improve its airport, according to McLendon.

In recent years, the city has used FAA AIP grants to extend the runway to 5,500 feet, upgrade the lights along the runway and construct a taxiway that extends the length of the runway. It also used FFA AIP funds to upgraded the airport’s terminal.

The renovations included a new roof, a new heating and cooling unit, upgrades to the building’s electrical and plumbing systems, new paint, paneling and flooring, an expanded break room, a ramp that meets the Americans with Disabilities requirements, and landscaping around the terminal.

“We plan to continue to make improvements out here,” McLendon said. “It’s important that we do. I don’t want anyone to think this airport isn’t important, because it is. It’s extremely important when it comes to creating jobs. All of these improvements are about jobs. The airport is vital to getting businesses to locate here.”

 

In other business:

• The council approved an ABC application for a special retail license for the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce Fish Fry, which will be held Oct. 15 at the Camellia Pavilion at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library.
• Approved the following expenditures:

• $1,027.80 to McKinley Tire for six new tires for Ambulance No. 39.

• $1,450.80 to Mayer Electric Supply for a pole and base for a Willow Lane streetlight.

• $1,137.26 to Greenville Tire for four tires for Street Department Truck No. 80.

• $3,474.06 to Warrior Tractor for seals, idlers, housing, gaskets and retainer for Landfill Equipment No. 60.

• $8,350 to J.J. Jaxon Monument Company for two marble ledgers and one marble marker for graves C30, C31 and C54 for the Pioneer Cemetery Project. The funding was provided through the Pioneer Cemetery Allocation account.

• $8,660 to Eclectic Stoneworks by Ray Hall for travel expenses, material and repairs to Section C of Pioneer Cemetery.

 

The Greenville City Council will hold its next meeting Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
