A downtown Luverne convenience store was robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday morning.

The incident was caught on surveillance. At approximately 4:01 a.m., two black males entered the Tom Thumb, located on 423 South Forest Avenue. Both covered up their faces with white towels.

“The one with the gun entered first,” said David Sankey, assistant chief of the Luverne Police Department.

The suspect had what appeared to be a revolver wrapped in a towel. Sankey said the man was between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches and weighed about 180-210 pounds. He wore blue jeans, a white t-shirt, black sneakers with white soles and a half-inch white strap. The suspect also wore a fleece Alabama jacket, which was recovered with other clothing items on St. John Avenue.

“We recovered three or four pieces,” Sankey said. “I am taking it to forensics.”

The second suspect appeared to be about 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet. He wore khaki pants and a shirt with black and white vertical stripes.

The suspects stole $73 and a few cigars from the store. If caught, they will face charges of first-degree robbery.

No one was hurt during the robbery.

The suspects were last seen fleeing on foot on 11th Street.

At least 17 law enforcement officers, including a K-9 unit from Covington County, took part in the search for the suspects. Officers were on the scene at 4:02 a.m.
