Betty Ann Marlow

Funeral service for Mrs. Betty Ann Marlow will be held Saturday, June 13, at 1 p.m. Services and interment will be at Old Elam Baptist Church. Carter Rice and West Funeral Home of Greenville will direct and Rev. Sylvester Caldwell will officiate.

Marlow was born Jan. 31, 1935, to the parents of John Cecil, Sr. and Gladys A. Philips in Middletown, Ohio. She married Lindsey Sweatt and to this union four children were born. She later met and married Robert Marlow and to this union one child was born.

Betty worked in the dietary department at Kettering Medical Center in Ohio until her retirement. Betty joined the Good Samaritan Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio, where she remained for more than 20 years under the leadership of Rev. K. Mosby. There she sang in the choir, among other things she enjoyed. After moving to Greenville, she joined the Old Elam Baptist Church where she served faithfully in Sunday school, as a deaconess, as president of the Mission Society, and was then named president emeritus. She was a faithful member of the choir and loved singing in her glorious soprano voice.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, John Cecil Philips, Sr. and Gladys Philips; five brothers, John Cecil Jr., Percy, Robert, Edgar, and Norman; two sisters, Gladys “Peachie” Jones and Aleathia “Dena” Sherron.

She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Robert Marlow; three sons, John Marlow, Sherman Sweatt (devoted caregiver), both of Greenville, and Jay Sweatt of Clearwater, Fla.; two daughters, Teri (Farrell) Rivard, Hamilton, Ohio, and Kim (Darryl) Walker, Middleton, Ohio. Two special daughters, Sandra Harris (caregiver) and Claudette (Leon) Truitt, both of Greenville. Four stepchildren, Sharon and Sheri, Wisconsin, Michael, New Mexico, Diane, Georgia; two sisters, Patricia Hill and Norma Jean Harris, Middleton, Ohio; Three sisters-in-law, Sally (Darryl) Glasco, Ella (Burnise, Jr.) Bettison, both from N.Y., and Clara Kent, Foley, Ala. One brother-in-law, James Edward (Charmaine) Kent, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, devoted friends and extended family members.
