A years-long tradition at Georgiana School continues on June 1 with the eighth annual Georgiana School Summer Youth Basketball Camp.
The camp will be held from 8 a.m. to noon from June 1-3, and is held for boys and girls ages 8-14.
Georgiana head basketball coach Kirk Norris has been overseeing the camp for going on a decade, and he said that his goal each year has not changed.
“We try to teach them the skills to be successful while playing the game of basketball,” Norris said.
“We try and do this by making it fun and enjoyable for them. Basically, they are learning skills while having fun doing it.”
The camp will center on key basketball skills taught by Georgiana High School basketball staff and players, such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defense.
The camp will also feature daily competitions and game play that include gotcha, hot shot, free throw contests and five-on-five games.
For eight years, the camp has provided the county’s youth with an opportunity to hit the hardwood with some of the best current and former talent to grace a basketball court, with former guest coaches including student assistant coach Matt Campbell, former Georgiana standout Adrian Rich and current stars Richard Boggan and Jacquez Payton.
The cost to attend is $25 per camper, and each camper will receive a Georgiana basketball camp T-shirt.
A camp store will be available for campers with snacks and drinks, and camp champions will be awarded prizes on the final day.
The deadline to register is May 21, and it’s also the last day to guarantee a T-shirt.
Late registration will be held on Monday, June 1 just prior to the beginning of the camp.
All proceeds go toward the benefit of the Georgiana High School basketball program.
