Butler County Schools System students will get a taste of the future Wednesday.

School officials are hosting the first ever “Transition Day” for students in Pre-K to 11^th grade.

Rheta McClain, administrative assistant for learning supports, said the goal of the event is to alleviate some of the anxiety that comes with moving up in grade or changing from one school to another.

“We hope to limit anxiety students feel about transitioning to a new school and grade level, to promote school pride, and to assist students in evaluating self-readiness for the 2015–2016 school year,” she said. “As a result of Transition Day, hopefully students will be fueled with excited about school year and will even spark interest in summer programs that can assist students in preparing for the upcoming school year.”

The event also fits with the school system’s recently implemented five-year strategic plan.

“One of the goals of the strategic plan is to ensure that all students will enter every grade prepared and one of the strategies to accomplish this goal is to improve grade level and school transitions for students and parents,” McClain said. “Transition Day is one of the activities to improve this area.”

Students will have the opportunity to meet teachers, learn what the expectations for their new grade or school are, participate in mini-lessons, and ask questions.

The Class of 2015 is also encouraged to take part in Transition Day, by giving back to the community.

“Community service is strongly encouraged but not required this year,” McClain said. “Although it is not mandatory for seniors, hopefully each senior will take advantage of this day by giving back to the community as a means of saying ‘thank you.’”
