Brantley Mayor Bernie Sullivan said discussions have begun with a person interested in building a restaurant at the busy intersection of U.S. Hwy. 331 and West Emmett Avenue.

“It’s in the planning stages, right now,” Sullivan said. “He’s just kicking around ideas.”

The town owns half of the now vacant lot in question. Timmy Hall owns the rest. The full lot has 100 square feet of frontage on Main Street and sits across from Michael’s Southern Food Restaurant. The lot is 100 feet deep.

Sullivan said the town would sell the land to the interested party, not lease it.

First, he and the town council want to see plans for the development. He was told the restauranteur was going for an old-fashioned look, like Cracker Barrel.

Sullivan would not share the name of the individual or proposed restaurant, but did say the business would not be a franchise.

“This is what Brantley needs, retail tax growth,” Sullivan said. “The city’s got to grow.”

He celebrated the opening of a new general store on South Main Street, called Travelers Quick Stop. The owner plans to offer fuel in addition to groceries.

In other news, the council voted to add a speed hump on Mill Street, at the request of residents.

The council meets again May 12 at 6 p.m.
