A time to commemorate and to celebrate is coming on Monday, January 19. The Butler County Civic League is once again hosting its Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast at Dunbar Recreation Center. The event starts at 8 a.m. with a full southern-style breakfast, to be served by area volunteers, including the Greenville High School JROTC.
The keynote speaker of the event will be the Honorable Tracie Todd. Following law school, Todd served the State of Alabama as a Deputy District Attorney for the Tenth Judicial Circuit Jefferson County, Birmingham Division with responsibility for felony and misdemeanor prosecution. She was the lead attorney for hundreds of cases from the issuance of a warrant to disposition at trial. She worked crime cases such as capital murder, theft, rape, robbery, Medicaid fraud and juvenile matters. Through her work performance, Todd was awarded the David Barber Prosecutor’s Award.
In 2010 the Birmingham City Council appointed Todd as a Judge. Todd serves as a member of the National Executive Board for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a member of the Birmingham Sister City Commission, and the founder of the Japanese Language House where she instructed local primary and secondary students in Japanese language and culture weekly at not cost. Todd was named NAACP Woman of Excellence and City of Birmingham Hidden Hero award.
Tickets for the event are $5 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. For more information, contact Thelma B. Mixon at 464-3956 or George Cook at 382-1700.
