Greenville’s City Council approved a resolution to participate in Alabama’s severe weather preparedness tax weekend at its meeting on Monday night.

This will be the state’s fourth severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday, which begins at 12:01 a.m. on Fri., Feb. 20, and ends at midnight on Sun., Feb. 22, 2015. Retailers can’t charge any waived sales taxes on items that are legally exempt during the two-day holiday.

The holiday allows Alabama shoppers to stock up on tax free items and supplies costing less than $60 for homes and businesses to prepare for a natural disaster or even a general emergency, according to the Alabama Retail’s website.

Generators casting $1,000 or less can also be purchased free of the state’s 4 percent sales tax during the holiday.

In other business, the council:

• approved a resolution to authorize the city to enter into a grant agreement with South Central Alabama Development Commission Area Agency on Aging for Fiscal Year 2015; and,

• approved expenditures for Katom Restaurant Supply, Inc. ($3,115) for a Vulcan Deck oven for Dunbar Center, APAC-Midsouth Paving, Inc. ($1,571.57) for cold mix for patching, Harris Computer Systems ($11,719.71) for the annual maintenance contract for administrative financial software from February 2015 to January 2016, for Presley Enterprises ($6,497) for fencing repair and replacement for Holly Field and for Gulf States Mobility, Inc. ($1,181.33) for repairs to the nutrition lift van.

The next city council meeting will be held on Mon., Dec. 15 at 5 p.m. in city hall.
