Many people who wonder when they’ll be able to hear Greenville native Lindsey Benedict perform again will get the opportunity on Nov. 30 during the 11 a.m. service at Antioch East Baptist Church.

Benedict, who lives in Nashville, Tenn. and grew up surrounded by music, will be singing songs from her latest and new album adventure in jazz music, “Jazz is Heaven.”

For the past 20 years, Benedict has been performing Christian music. She said this new album is her official launch and debut of her jazz career.

“There are so many things I tell people when they ask me why jazz,” Benedict said. “Jazz makes me happy.”

Benedict, who has also dabbled in ballroom dancing, said she’s also drawn to the rhythm and diversity jazz offers.

“It’s very expressive and vibrant,” she said. “It’s not stale.”

Living in the country music capital of the world has its benefits with its top-notch recording studios.

Benedict said it’s quite expensive to record an album and that’s why she’s started a Kickstarter campaign to help raise funds for her jazz album.

Benedict has been living in Nashville for a year, where her husband, Joe, works.

“I’m really going for it this time,” she said, adding that it had been a long-time dream to live in the Tennessee city.

Benedict said everything, from singing in choir in church while growing up to learning about music from her parents, Charles and Margie Kennedy, has all led to this moment in her life.

“Jazz is Heaven,” Benedict’s third album, will be a five-song EP that will include a few originals and a couple jazz favorites, including “Blue Skies” and “Wade in the Water.”

“I love that one,” Benedict said about “Wade in the Water.” “It can be sung anywhere, in a club or church.”

The album’s title song is an original from Benedict, who got into song writing during her college days at Auburn University, where she ironically enough, majored in science.

For the album, Benedict said she’s still on the fence about doing a song called “Dance on My Shoes,” about a daughter dancing on her dad’s shoes.

As of Thursday morning, Benedict has raised $2,680 of her $10,000 goal through her Kickstarter campaign. The last day to contribute is Thurs., Dec. 11, at midnight.
