Due to a lack of participation in youth sports, the Georgiana City Council repealed the parks and recreation board at its Tuesday meeting.

Georgiana Mayor Jerome Antone said the number of boys and girls participating in youth sports have dwindled.

“We don’t have the participation like we should have had,” Antone said. “We don’t have active participation.”

During this football season, Georgiana had approximately 45 youth sign up, along with about 32 cheerleaders, the Mayor said.

Antone said for basketball, the city only had four teams formed.

“We had anywhere from six to eight kids on each team,” he said.

In basketball, five players are allowed on the court in games.

As far as the other sports — baseball and softball — Antone said last year, the city didn’t have a baseball team, adding that during the transition to get a new parks director, kids went to participate in other parks programs.

“We have lost a lot of kids,” he said. “We need someone to run the program the way it needs to be run. That’s what has hurt Georgiana’s parks and recreation over the years.”

Instead of having a director over the parks and recreation department, the Georgiana City Councile and Mayor will handle the daily duties.

“We are working hard everyday to get the right folks in place to get this thing taken care of once and for all,” Antone said. “The reason why we repealed that board was so it can be done correctly.”

In other business, the council approved repairs to be done on the stage at the Hank Williams Park for $3,781.

Additionally, the council set the annual Christmas tree lighting event for Mon., Dec. 1, at 6 p.m.
