The Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of burglaries that occurred Monday night. The crime spree started in Highland Home and spilled into south Montgomery County before daybreak.
“We had two break-ins and one attempt,” said Michael Johnson, a CCSO investigator.
A Citgo service station in Highland Home was the first stop. Johnson said four suspects entered by knocking out the back wall and tried to break into the store’s ATM.
Nelson’s Grocery was the next stop. The suspects gained access by breaking the storefront glass.
“They stole cash from the ATM and cigarettes,” Johnson said. “They later attempted to break into the BP, but were either spooked off or just unsuccessful.”
Owners were still totaling losses Tuesday, but all were high enough to warrant felony charges. Including damages to the properties and ATM machines, Johnson said losses would be several thousands of dollars. The suspects face three counts each of breaking and entering and criminal mischief; and two counts of theft of property for the Crenshaw County crimes.
In addition to Monday’s crimes, the group is suspected of similar crimes in neighboring counties. Johnson opted not to discuss cases under investigation by other law enforcement.
The sheriff’s office asks that anyone with information concerning the crimes call 335-6865.
“The residents of Crenshaw County are our ears and eyes and we will be more than receptive of any information provided,” Johnson said. “If you see any suspicious activity, please don’t hesitate to call.”
