Lawanda Harrell does not miss a chance to bring her grandchildren to Luverne Public Library’s monthly Craft Day.
“They’re wonderful,” she said. “They give the children something to do.”
The library’s Kathryn Tomlin started craft days in 2004 and the interest has not waned. The program averages about 24 participants a month, ages 3 to 12. Parents and grandparents often join in on the fun, too.
“When I started working, the only thing the lib did was summer reading program,” she said.
Tomlin was eager to share her interests in all things crafty. She manages to find a craft and a snack that fits with the theme of a library book. Her favorite part is coming up with the snack. Cookies usually win, which is just fine with the children.
“I really love the cookies,” said 8-year-old Jeremiah Holladay.
Participants learned all about fireflies in August. This month, “Where the Wild Things Are” will take center stage.
Tomlin has planned craft days through the end of the year. “I enjoy doing them and so do the kids,” she said. “It’s all about the kids.”
