Cougars shut out Raiders

If the first two games of the season are any indication, the Cougars defense is unstoppable. Crenshaw Christian Academy finished a second shutout game Friday night, scoring 47 points before calling it a night.
Head Coach Greg Gibson could not be more pleased.
“Defense has played real well,” he said after the game. “The final possession was the only time (South Montgomery Christian Academy) crossed the 50-yard line all night and it was on into the third quarter before they had a first down of any kind.”
The Cougars have not played in their own territory yet. The wins came on the road. Last week in Dothan, CCA won 27 to 0 against Northside Methodist Academy.
“We did a good job last week, a better one this week,” Gibson said. “The thing I was proudest of was turnovers were eliminated. They responded.”
At this week’s practices, the Cougars worked hard to eliminate fumbles. The team had seven against NMA and lost the ball on four of them.
Gibson said he was proud of his entire team. Special teams performed well and his JV players took over the offense at the half.
“Everybody got dirty tonight,” he said. “It was good for our youngins’ – JV got to play for an extended period of time. They scored a touchdown sometime in the third quarter.”
By halftime, the score was 40 to 0 and Gibson decided to play varsity defense and JV offense. He has never been a fan of running up scores and pulling out his first string was the best he could do.
The team went into its first two games blind. Since it was the start of the season, there was no film available on either opponent. Gibson hopes it will not be the same case next Friday when the Cougars take on Sparta at another away game. Right now, he says he does not know a lot about the team.
In the meantime, the Cougars will continue adding to their arsenal of offensive plays. Gibson said he would work on improving fundamentals and putting in more offense at practices this week.
