Ozell Powell, Sr.

Funeral services Mr. Ozell Powell, Sr. will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m. at Greenville High School. Pastor Jeff Abner will officiate. Burial will follow in the Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery with Hudson Funeral Services directing. Mr. Powell was born Nov. 17, 1973, to the late Clara Mae Powell and Mr. Booker Hering. One sister, Patina Powell, preceded him in death. At an early age, he joined Spring Hill Baptist Church in Forest Home, Ala. He received his diploma from Greenville High School where he lettered in football, track, basketball and baseball. He went on to attend the University of Alabama where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma, Inc. Fraternity, Theta Delta Chapter.  He played football on the 1992 national championship team under coach Gene Stallings. After college, he went on to play in the NFL, participating with both Washington Redskins and Atlanta Falcons.  During his athletic career, he also played with the Birmingham Thunderbolts and the Birmingham Steel Dogs. He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Ozell Powell, Jr., one stepdaughter, Amaiya, Birmingham, Ala.; one sister, Shirley Gregory (Bruce) Forest Home, Ala.; two brothers, Jake Powell (Racquel) Forest Home, Ala., and Henry Fields (Mary) Greenville, Ala. He leaves 10 nieces and nephews that he loved dearly: Chakeeta, Laderrick, Jacquez, Lavangelo, GeAngelo, Breandalyn, Kersey, Jonathan, Jacob, and Shannon. He also leaves three great nieces: Kiana, Kamia and Germany; and a godson, Jacqua Daniels, Georgia; his close friends Leigh, Dexter, Elijah, Sennacherib, Kendall; a special and devoted friend, Kathy Higdon; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.
