The Brantley Town Council applied for a grant that would cover sewage upgrades on several streets.

Town Administrator Phillip Mosely said the project would continue efforts started in 2007.

“We’ve been trying to replace some of the oldest lines in town,” he said. “We replaced some lines along Sasser Street in 2007.”

The town replaced additional lines about four years ago.

The funds come from a Community Development Block Grant, which is administered through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The grants are used strictly for town improvements to the infrastructure. Towns detail the proposed work in the grant applications and learn within a few months whether or not the funds are approved.

“We’ve missed it for the past couple of years now,” said Mosely. “But we’ve got a pretty good chance this time.”

If Brantley receives the $350,000 grant, the funds will be used to replace main sewer transmission lines that service households along portions of East Emmett Avenue, Pecan Street, James Street, Foster Street and Mill Street.

“We’ve got lots of concrete and terra cotta pots and some collapsed,” said Mosely.

Mosely said the project would have a ripple effect, improving service throughout Brantley.

The application was submitted in mid-July. If it is accepted, the town will be notified around September.
