Friends of Zackary Smith, a 13-year-old Greenville native who was killed in a motorcycle accident earlier this month, will crank up their bikes Sept. 13 for a benefit in Smith’s memory.

Event organizer April Richey said having a bike ride in honor of Smith just made sense.

“The biker family has always looked after fellow bikers and riders,” Richey said. “(Zack’s parents) David and Kelley have ridden bikes for some time now. Zack grew up riding four-wheelers and dirt bikes. So it only seemed fitting that we do a ride in honor of Zack.”

“Zack’s Ride and Benefit” will feature a poker run, which is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Sonic in Greenville and will end at Stock Law Gap on Shackleville Road. Riders will visit five checkpoints, receiving a card at each stop. The rider with the best poker hand at the final stop will be the winner and will receive $100. The rider with the worst hand will receive $25.

“This poker run is open to all bikes, cars and trucks,” Richey said.

The cost to enter is $20 for the driver and $10 for passengers. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

There will also be a bike show with the winner crowned via a people’s choice vote.

The entry fee to the poker run includes lunch and admission to Benefit at the Gap, which will take place following the ride and will feature live music, an auction and door prizes. Admission to the benefit is $10 without a poker hand.

Cowboy Justice, Joe Wright and Renny McNaughton are scheduled to perform, according to Richey.

All proceeds will go to the Smith family to help offset hospital expenses and funeral costs.
