Butler County officials are encouraging citizens to join in an effort to clean neighborhoods, roadsides and highways.

The Butler County Commission has declared April 19-26 “Don’t Drop It on Alabama” spring clean up.

People Against a Littered State will provide trash bags to individuals or groups who agree to clean up a neighborhood or stretch of roadway. Officials with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and the Butler County Road Department will come around and pick up the trash bags after the area has been cleaned up.

“Either our department or the Sheriff’s Office will come around and pick up the bags and dispose of them,” Butler County Engineer Dennis McCall said. “In the past the bags have been orange, and when they are left by the side of the road for us to come pick up it really provides a visual of the work that has been done to clean up our county. It’s really a great program.”

Butler County Commission Chairman Frank Hickman said the program is an easy way for citizens to make an impact on the county.

“It’s an opportunity to beautify the community with just a little bit of effort,” he said. “We hope we have good participation.”
