Born on Friday, Sept. 13, 1918, Virginia Elizabeth Andrews was the second of seven children born from the union of John Charles and Ola Lee Solomon Andrews. She was welcomed home by a brother, Charles. Being a child of the depression era, she was frugal with her time and her finances; she wasted neither. These characteristics served her well throughout her entire life. She was an excellent student in grade school through high school. In the seventh grade she was the proofreader of the local weekly newspaper where her father was the lithographer and operated the presses. As a high school senior, she was president of her class. She was an avid tennis player and in 1936 won the state championship in her division. After graduation, she became the bookkeeper for J.W. Barrett Lumber Company in Camden, AL and remained in that position through her marriage in 1946 and until becoming a Mother in 1953. She and her husband, Thomas Glenn Holman, moved to Fort Deposit, AL in the fall of 1956 where they opened a home-owned and operated Western Auto. They remained there until March, 1978. Mr. Holman ran the business, Mrs. Holman ran the books. They completely completed each other for 61 years.
Mrs. Holman became active in the community where she was a long-standing member and past president of The Three Arts Club and a member of the ladies bridge club. Mrs. Holman was a 51 year member of the Fort Deposit United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities throughout the years including Sunday School teacher and a member of numerous official committees. She especially enjoyed singing in the choir. At the time of her death, Mrs. Holman was a member of the First Baptist Church, Greenville, MS.
Mrs. Holman was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Charles Leon Andrews, Willard Hart (Bill) Andrews, William Clemons (Clem) Andrews, John Miller Andrews and a sister, Martha Lee Andrews Foley. She is survived by her daughter Rhonda (John Richard) Holman Watson of Greenville, MS, a sister Jean Ray Andrews Adams of Dothan, AL and a number of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Bill Adams, Bruce Adams, David Edwards, Henry Golson, Robert Holman, Dodd McGough, Kenneth McGough and Billy Ward.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Fort Deposit United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 398, Fort Deposit, AL 36032 or the donors choice. The family would like to thank the management and staff at Magnolia Gardens of Greenville, MS and personal caregivers for their love, care and support for the past 22 months and Grace Community Hospice.
