The Butler County Board of Education has a new president.

Thursday the board unanimously elected Terry Williams to fill the role, replacing Mickey Jones, who has served as president for the past year.

“I’m pleased to be elected as chairman of this board,” Williams said. “I hope to have communication with all of the board members and not just some.”

Butler County Schools Superintendent Darren Douthitt thanked Mickey Jones for serving as the board’s president.

“I’d like to thank Mr. Jones for his service as president and for the leadership he has provided for this board during the last year,” Douthitt said.

Billy Jones was elected as the board’s vice president at the Thursday meeting.

In other business:

Douthitt announced that the school system was able to sell three surplus buses for $10,096.

In October, Douthitt announced that the school system made nearly $181,000 thanks to a surplus property sale of 17 buses and scrap metal.

Douthitt said the school system plans to use $12,000 to $15,000 to upgrade video equipment on several school buses.

The school board also recognized the McKenzie School football team, which finished the season with a 9-3 record and advanced to the second round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs.

“These boys displayed sportsmanship, heart, and all the things you’d expect young men this age to display that point to future success in life,” Douthitt said.

McKenzie head coach Josh McLendon applauded his team’s success, but said the team fell shot of its ultimate goal.

“I’d like to thank Mr. Douthitt and the board for recognizing these young men for what they did,” he said. “I’d also like to thank Mr. (Mike) Gunter, Coach (Miles) Brown and the entire staff at McKenzie School and the McKenzie community for their support this season. We had a great year because of these young men. They put in the work, and it shows in the success we had. I’m proud of what we did, but I’m not satisfied with what we did. Our goal is to make a state championship and win a state championship. That’s what we’re working towards.”
