Veterans deserve respect

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.”
We’re not sure that author Cynthia Ozick had Veterans Day in mind when she penned those words, but they are certainly fitting for the occasion.
We often fear that for most Americans this day will become nothing more than a three-day weekend and a chance to cruise local stores in search of bargains.
That would be a travesty.
Veterans Day should be about doing all that we can to honor the men and women that have served our great country.
Some served far from home, while others served just down the street.
They all sacrificed.
Many served in hostile environments. Some saw terrible things. Often times when they’ve returned home from combat, the battles still rage on inside their minds. Some have serious injuries. Some suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
No one returns from battle without scars.
There’s nothing we can really do to pay these brave men and women back for what they have given to our country – to us.
Nevertheless, Veterans Day is a chance for us to show them that we appreciate their service. It’s an opportunity to show them that their sacrifices didn’t go unnoticed.
This Veterans Day let’s pause to remember our service members, past and present, as well as their family members.
Let’s honor them for selflessly serving our nation and for bravely defending our freedom.
That’s the very least we can do.
Our veterans have earned our respect. We should show them that respect each and every day, but on Veterans Day we should celebrate them.
