OBIT: Eugenia “Gena” Thompson Magoon

MAGOON, Mrs. Eugenia “Gena” Thompson, 95, departed this life peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2013, at Plymouth Harbor Retirement Community in Sarasota, Florida. She was born March 27, 1918, in Macon, Georgia, to Ira B. and Marie L. Thompson and was raised in Luverne, Alabama. After graduating from Luverne High School, she attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery and received her Bachelor of Science from Troy State Teacher’s College (now Troy University). She obtained a Certificate in Social Work from the University of Chicago and was employed as a social worker with the Alabama Department of Welfare.
In 1943 she married Harold C. Magoon and in 1946 re-located with him to the Buffalo, New York, area where she was a homemaker and volunteer for many community organizations. A lifelong Methodist, she served as president of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service and chairman of Vacation Bible School at Christ United Methodist Church. After moving to Sarasota in 1980, she joined First Church Sarasota and was chairman of United Methodist Women and also chairman for seven years of the Pineapple Antique Show sponsored by that group. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Sims of Tallahassee, Florida, son Al Magoon of DeLand, Florida, grandchildren June Campos and Brenda Campos of Tallahassee, and six great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband and by a daughter Mary Scot Magoon.
A celebration of her life was held on June 22 in Sarasota. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, November 9, at 11:30 a.m. at Emmaus Cemetery in Luverne.
