Piggly Wiggly in Luverne has been sold to Ramey Enterprises in Waynesboro, Miss., as part of a stalking horse bid filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Alabama.
A U.S. Bankruptcy judge approved the sale of it recently, and the group of buyers purchased the remaining 43 Belle Foods stores for $16.13 million.
According to the court filings, AWG and assembled bidders, which were mostly grocers, plan to close and sell off inventories before deciding whether or not to reopen them under existing or new names. Only 30 of the 43 stores will remain open.
Luverne’s is not expected to close.
Ramey Enterprises operates “Ramey’s” supermarkets in Butler and Chatom and 14 Mississippi locations.
