The Butler County Board of Education is taking another step in exploring the possibility of consolidating W.O. Parmer Elementary School and Greenville Elementary School.

At its regular meeting on Thursday, the board voted to hold a special called meeting on Saturday, July 6, at 8 a.m. for the purpose of selecting a committee to study the proposal to consolidate the schools.

Superintendent Darren Douthitt suggested to members of the board during his report on Thursday night that a committee be put together to study the proposal.

The meeting was scheduled to hash out the details concerning the formation of the committee.

The committee is expected to consist of approximately 12 members, including parents, teachers and administrators.

Douthitt said that the committee members would report back with their findings to the community after the conclusion of the fall semester, during the January 2014 Board of Education meeting.

Douthitt presented a plan for consolidation to the board at a May 30 work session. An item concerning the proposed consolidation was removed from the agenda for a special called meeting that was held following the work session after board members determined they needed more information and input from the community before making a decision.

During the work session, board members, teachers and parents voiced concerns about the proposal, which Douthitt says will allow the schools to expanded educational opportunities by creating additional electives for the students.

The July 6 meeting will be held at the Central Office Boardroom at 949 Oglesby Street, and the public attendance is encouraged.
