The Town of Brantley on Tuesday agreed to seek $350,000 in grant funds for sewer rehab.

The town is applying for a Community Development Block Grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

The project, if funded, would connect to a 2011 sewer rehab project that included the areas of Emmett and Wyatt streets.

It is expected to start on Mill Street and connect on East Emmett, and would help with drainage on James Street.

Officials said the sewer lines would come across a  pasture from Mill to Emmett.

Additionally, the council:

• Discussed delinquent business licenses, and that Town Administrator Phillip Moseley would send letters to businesses who have not paid theirs.

• Councilman Lorey Bogen reported he was in the process of checking to see who owns the James Street property in which the old lift station is located.

• Councilman Daryl Elliott said the streets in Brantley were “looking a little rough,” due to washouts.

• Discussed condemning the New Life Center building, which burned several years ago. Mayor Bernie Sullivan said the building is a liability.

Councilman Steve Walker said he agreed it was a liability, but that he would have “a bad taste in his mouth if we condemn it and get nothing” because it’s from a church.

The council agreed to see estimates to see how much the building is worth.

The town also recently purchased the lot next to the church for $2,600 and plans to clean off the lot and use it for parking, fall festivals and other community events.
