After taking local residents to the Land of Oz last year, the Highland Home Players Community Theater is now offering an excursion to the Planet of Who and the Jungle of Nool with a production of “Seussical the Musical” this weekend.
The musical is a fundraiser for the Highland Home Literacy Program.
Dean Kelly, the pastor at Highland Home Church of Christ and professor at Faulkner University where he is also involved in the theater department, is again directing the play.
Producer Melanie Matthews has said that one of the goals of the play has been to bring the school and the community together.
“We needed something to connect the community and the school,” she said about last year’s production and this year’s musical. “The community has always been involved in the school, but it’s always been the students putting on productions.”
Volunteers have worked to build sets, make costumes and learn the musical numbers.
Seussical is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and follows Horton the Elephant as he tries to save the tiny planet of Who, while Jojo, a Who, deals with his own set of problems on the small planet.
Showtimes are Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. in the HHS auditorium. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
