Crenshaw County’s Relay for Life was held last Friday night at Turner Park, and the event raised more than $59,000 for cancer research.
During the opening ceremonies, a brass ensemble from Luverne High School played the National Anthem, and cancer survivors made the first lap around the field before being joined by family members.
County Relay Committee members were recognized, as was each individual team.
“Fun activities included theme laps, games, and the womanless beauty pageant,” said county chairperson Cathy Wilkes.
The grand total for money raised was $59,533, which exceeds the county’s goal of $58,500.
“I feel great about exceeding our goal,” Wilkes said. “I was concerned Thursday night during our bank night because our money was down, but what a difference 24 hours made! We are very blessed to live in a county that has a caring and giving spirit.”
The following awards were presented:
Most money raised — Super Foods
Most money raised per capita — Hometown Medical
Relay Champions — Hometown Medical
Spirit of Relay — Luverne High School
Most money raised by an individual — Edna Ruth Norsworthy
Norsworthy was the top individual fundraiser for the 13th straight year.
“I am humbled and honored to receive this award for the 13th year, however, it is not just me,” said Norsworthy, who also said that she receives donations from individuals in seven states. “I receive this on behalf of all my supporters who send me their donations to this great cause. I do this in honor and memory of friends and relatives.”
“I truly believe this is a great mission to be involved with and my prayer is that one day a cure will be found,” she said.
