The south loves a beauty pageant, especially one that’s for a good cause.
On July 11 at 2 p.m., the Miss Independence Pageant arrives at the Ritz Theatre in downtown Greenville.
The event will serve as a fundraiser for Safe Harbor, the Children’s Advocacy Center, serving Butler, Crenshaw and Lowndes counties. The center assists children and their families who have witnessed, or have themselves been, victims of violence and abuse.
“This is our first fundraiser of this type, and we are very excited to bring this event to the area,” said Kathy Smyth, director of Safe Harbor.
Eight categories from zero (Baby Miss) to 16-19 years (Miss Independence) are planned.
Prizes will be given to the queen and runners up in each category. Miss Independence will receive a $250 scholarship. Additionally, an optional essay contest for the 16-19 age group will be held, with the winner receiving $250.
Contestants will be judged on poise, eye contact, smile and overall appearance.
Rehearsal is set for Friday, July 10, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. Photos must be submitted at this time. All entry forms must be postmarked by June 29, 2009. Entry fee is $20 per contestant. Photo entries into Photogenic category are $5 per photo.
