Funeral services for the late Mr. Tommie Powell Jr. were held on March 6 at Greenville High School. Rev. John Taylor officiated and burial will followed in Pine Flat cemetery. Hudson Funeral Services directed.
Tommie Powell, Jr. was born on Jan. 23, 1935, to Mrs. Ethel and Mr. Tommie Powell, Sr. who preceded him in death.
He was joined in holy matrimony to Sarah Jane Peagler Powell on Nov. 8, 1958. He joined New Hill Baptist Church at an early age and continued a connection with Pine Flat A.M.E. Zion Church.
The joy of his life was his family. “Bay” as he is lovingly called never met a stranger. He was the center force serving as a magnet for those around him. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and baseball. Young men looking for a coach or just a listening ear could always find him willing.
Fond memories of him will be remembered by his devoted wife of 54 years, Sarah J. Powell, and eight children. One daughter, Delphine Powell, and one son-in-law, James Allen Wilson, preceded him in death. There are five daughters Shelia (James) Wilson, Huntsville, Ala.; Shari Powell, Greenville, Ala.; Gladys (Terry) Patterson, Athens, Ala.; Patricia Powell, Greenville, Ala.; Donna Powell, Huntsville, Ala.; and three sons Tom (Nancy) Powell III, Greenville, Ala.; Ronald “Jody” Powell, Greenville, Ala.; and Eric (Tai) Powell, Dallas, Texas; one brother Clyde Powell, Chattahoocha, Fla.; two sisters Ethel Powell Warren, Pensacola, Fla., and Brenda Manning, Greenville, Ala.. There are 19 precious grandchildren, nine darling great-grandchildren, five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and very special friends.
