A fifth inning rally helped the Greenville Tigers down Selma 6-5, bringing the region title within the team’s reach in Thursday’s region match up.
Coach Brad Horn said the game wasn’t the team’s best performance.
“Our pitching was good, but we could have played better on our defensive side,” Horn said. “We had a couple of errors that cost us some runs.”
Rush Nimmer started on the mound for the Tigers, and gave up 5 runs, striking out 6 in six innings. Only 2 runs were earned, Horn said.
Raymond Moody got the save for the night after coming in for the seventh inning, striking out 3 of his 4 batters faced.
The Tigers had problems getting things going offensively, with Raymond Moody’s first inning single being the only hit for Greenville until the fourth inning.
During the fifth inning, however, Horn said that his Tigers finally started making contact with the ball.
“I think Demopolis’s pitcher got tired, and we started catching up with him,” Horn said.
Jay Johnson led off, reaching on a walk, followed by Nick Davis, whose infield ground ball was mishandled by the shortstop, letting Davis reach off an error.
Jeremy McGinty grabbed a single, and Ozell Carter stepped up, also picking up a single. Harper Vinson grabbed another single, allowing Tijuan Rudolph to step up and knock one over the third baseman’s head, successfully completing an entire run of the Tiger roster.
The inning racked up 5 runs for the Tigers, thanks to timely singles, giving the Tigers a 6-3 lead.
Demopolis battled back, grabbing two runs late in the sixth off errors, but were unable to produce any more.
“They left a lot of players on base, and we were lucky to come out with the win in such a close game,” Horn said. “But a win is a win.”
The Tigers returned to Demopolis Friday for two more games, but results were not available before press time. Demopolis can still claim the region by sweeping the double-header, but Greenville needed only one win to finish region play in the number one slot.
