McSwean: tax revenues on the decline

Due to falling land values, the county’s property tax revenues will be lower than usual this year, Revenue Commissioner Sherry McSwean told the County Commission on Monday morning.
“I haven’t worked out the figures to give a percentage since all this is a new development,” McSwean said. “We’ll be hard-pressed to meet estimates for this year, but I think we’ll be close.”
McSwean said she just wanted the commission to be aware of the developing situation.
In other business, the commission learned that the deadline for Community Development Block Grants has been extended from the usual May deadline until late summer.
The last CDBG grant went toward construction on Daniel Branch Road in the amount of $400,000.
The commission gave the sheriff permission to hire a part-time deputy.
