Reese Raybon has a reputation around Greenville.

The longtime grocer and owner of Raybon’s Grocery is known for his white apron, exceptional customer service and mouth-watering steaks.

But his reputation has little to do with those things.

Raybon has a reputation as someone willing to serve others.

It’s for that reason that the Greenville Area Jaycees named Raybon the 2013 John D. Murphy Citizen of the Year at Thursday night’s Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

“I’ve been wondering if this is real,” Raybon said after being presented with the award. “I’m speechless. I really don’t know what I could say. I appreciate it. I don’t deserve it, but I appreciate it.

“I don’t deserve it, but for the calendar year 2013 it’s mine and they can’t have it back,” Raybon said with a smile.

Jaycee Ben Norman said choosing Raybon as the Citizen of the Year was an easy decision.

Norman cited the way Raybon treats those who cross his path as “first-class people,” his work as a volunteer at L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital and his work stocking the food pantry at Walnut Street Church of Christ as just a few of the things that led to the Jaycees selecting Raybon for the award.

“He’s been a pivotal member of our community for a long time,” Norman said. “He’s dedicated his life to helping others.”

The award was established in memory of John D. Murphy by his wife, Susan Murphy, with the help of the Jaycees, to honor individuals who volunteer their time to help the community.
