LBW Community College recently received good news from the U.S. Department of Education on two of its technical programs.

Both the newly-established culinary arts program and the vascular technology (ultrasound) program are now added to the list of approved programs for federal student aid.

“This approval notification essentially means that students who enroll in these programs can now apply for federal student aid, including Pell Grants,” said LBWCC President Dr. Herb Riedel.

“This is truly good news for our students and increases the number of our programs eligible for this type of financial assistance.”

The culinary arts program is a short certificate program and can be completed in two semesters.

Instruction is provided in food safety, nutrition, and food preparation.

Students participate in classroom instruction on campus in Andalusia, and gain hands-on experience in preparing, seasoning, and cooking a variety of foods in the carriage house kitchen of Springdale Estate.

The vascular technology program, offered at LBWCC in Opp, is specialized skill training designed for students who have completed an accredited diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasound) program and/or are currently registered with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

“Many students in our area need financial assistance to pursue their postsecondary education. The approval of these programs makes it possible for more students to achieve their dreams,” said Riedel.
