Several “new” entries have joined and will join the fleet of service vehicles and equipment used by the City of Georgiana.

Mayor Mike Middleton announced at the January council meeting Tuesday night three trucks–2001, 2002 and 2003 models–along with a bull dozer had been purchased for the city through government surplus during the month of December.

Two of the trucks are already in use by the city with the third being prepped, he said.

Total cost for all four items was approximately $18,000.

The council also voted to approve Chief James Blackmon’s request to purchase a 2006 Crown Victoria for $7,500 for the city’s police department. The additional car will allow each of the city’s eight officers use of his own car and eliminate using the same patrol vehicle on back-to-back shifts, reducing wear and tear and mileage on individual units.

“We don’t know what the future is going to hold in term of getting grants for cars, so we had better do something while we are able,” said Chief Blackmon.

Middleton also announced he had driven through all the city’s trailer parks as promised and only two would be issued business licenses for 2011. “We sent out the certified letters in December and they knew what was expected. Until the other owners get their roads fixed, they won’t get a license,” he stated.

The city’s new anti-litter signs have also arrived and should be going up in each of the five districts and posted at the city limits at all entrance to Georgiana, Middleton said.
