Residents of Crenshaw County now have a new way to get a discount on some prescription medications thanks to the County Commission’s partnership with the Coast2Coast Drug Discount program.

Ron Howard, a representative of the company, met with the Commission in October to discuss bringing the program to the county, and he returned to Monday’s Commission meeting to deliver a stack of discount cards.

“The card is free,” Howard said. “You don’t have to qualify.  It’s like a coupon out of the paper.  It’s a point-of-sale discount, and over 60,000 medications are discounted.”

Howard said that the card may reduce a copay if you have insurance, but if you don’t have insurance, it works 100 percent of the time.  He also said that the card will work if you have Medicare.

“We’re now in 44 counties, and we feel like we’ll have 50 by the end of the year,” Howard said.

Howard also said that all four pharmacies in the county — B&B Drugs, Crenshaw Drugs, Foster Drugs and Rite Aid — are participating, as well as all major pharmacy chains.

“We are the only card out there that doesn’t go to mail order, and we want to drive business to the pharmacy that wouldn’t be there otherwise,” he said. “Any way that you can help to get the cards out there, it will benefit residents.”

The cards are also valid outside Crenshaw County.

In addition to discounts on prescriptions, the card will also work for dental, vision, lab work, imaging and even pet medications.

The cards will be placed in all county buildings, and Howard said the plan is also to distribute the cards to local pharmacies.
