Greenville High School softball came to a disappointing end Friday after the Tigers lost to Rehobeth and then Gulf Shores.

Coach Donna Sunnycalb said her girls played a good game versus Rehobeth, managing to keep it close until the seventh inning.

“Once again, however, the error bug came back around and bit us,” Sunnycalb said.

Rehobeth scored 2 runs in the seventh to secure their win, 5-1.

Sunnycalb said errors have been a thorn in her side the entire year.

“We can’t keep our mind in the game for a full seven innings,” Sunnycalb said.

As for the second game versus Gulf Shores, Sunnycalb said her girls might have gotten complacent. Gulf Shores won the match up 11-0.

“I though we were going to give them a better run than we did,” Sunnycalb said.

Now that the season is over, Sunycalb said she’s going to rethink her coaching strategy.

“I think bottom line, we need more game experience,” Sunnycalb said.

This means trying to play every one of the 18 games they are allowed to play, as well as entering all seven tournaments.

“We might try to start the season later also, so we can have less big gaps in our schedule and be more focused on softball,” Sunnycalb said.

The Tigers finished their season with a 16-18 record, which Sunnycalb said was a losing record but still a big improvement from years past.

Hopefully, she can build on this year’s accomplishments with the 13 players that will be returning, Sunnycalb said.

“I am no saying they don’t have some big shoes to fill, cause we will be losing a few key players,” Sunnycalb said. “But we will still have a pretty experienced team.”
